How Hormonal Imbalances Can Cause Added Body Fat

You could have an underlying hormonal imbalance causing your body to hold on to its fat.

See even when we are well, achieving a lean body is more than just calories in, calories out

But when you have wayward hormones?

It can be an impossible task.

So…

I want to talk about common imbalances so, together, we can set you on the right path.

Let’s take a look…

High cortisol

Most modern women face daily stress; from career deadlines to busy children, running a household to paying the bills.

As this stress mounts the adrenal glands to produce more adrenaline and cortisol to cope with the strain, to get through the day.

And as cortisol rises a number of important changes happen that impact the size of your waistline…

  • Post-stress eating increases
  • Long-term stress (chronic release of cortisol) can cause a depressed mood. This has been shown to increase the appetite
  • Food cravings hit: for sugar and fat
  • Fat storage deposits can be moved, brought and stashed in the tummy area
  • Cortisol may even cause baby fat cells to mature into fully fledged versions of themselves…

It’s no wonder shedding belly and body fat can be so hard!

What signs and symptoms provide a hint that you have high cortisol levels?

  • Weight gain, especially around the upper body, midsection, and face
  • Acne
  • An irregular menstrual cycle
  • A flushed face
  • Fatigue
  • A headache

Cortisol can also contribute to the next hormone imbalance…

Leptin resistance

As stress continues the elevated levels of cortisol trigger fat cells to release more leptin because, in acute stress, this mobilises and burns fat to produce energy.

Makes sense, right?

But after a while, like an employee being continually yelled at by her boss, the cells tire of responding to this signal.

The result?

Leptin resistance…

As leptin loses its power, feelings of fullness subside and hungry can skyrocket.

Other indicators include:

  • Overweight and obesity
  • Fatigue
  • High triglyceride levels
  • Menopausal weight gain
  • Joint problems

Insulin resistance

While we’re on the topic of stress, it’s important we discuss insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance occurs when the cells grow tired of responding to, you guessed it, the hormone insulin.

This occurs with chronic stress as well as overweight and obesity, sugar-laden diets, lack of exercise, poor sleep habits, certain medications (including the oral contraceptive pill), and a lack of vital nutrients like magnesium, chromium and omega 3 fats.

What signs and symptoms indicate a potential underlying problem of insulin resistance?

  • Tiredness
  • A large waistline
  • High blood pressure
  • Dark skin patches
  • Skin tags
  • Infertility
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Hypothyroidism

I see a sluggish thyroid in many clients who are struggling to achieve a lean body.

As the thyroid slows down so, too, do our body’s processes and energy production.

This can lead to fat gain and other problems like…

  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Feeling cold
  • Dry skin
  • A foggy brain
  • Fatigue
  • A wayward menstrual cycle

This is why I assess all of my clients for possible underlying hormonal imbalances when we begin working together.

I know that shedding unhealthy fat takes effort and I hate seeing women beat themselves up for ‘failing’ when the downfall isn’t a lack of willpower but a missed diagnosis.
