Banana Nut Smoothie

This delicious banana nut smoothie is high in protein and water-soluble fibre, which can help eliminate harmful substances from the body. It is also high in healthy anti-inflammatory omega 3 fats, which are beneficial in the post-workout recovery phase.
I like to add slippery elm bark powder (can be purchased online or at health food stores), which is a functional superfood, that helps heal and soothe the gut lining. It doesn’t take away from the delicious banana-nut flavour, but offers great deal of health benefits.
This banana nut smoothie makes a great post-workout meal as it contains sufficient amount of muscle building proteins and readily available carbohydrates.
I really enjoy treating myself to smoothies after my workouts. Consuming protein post-training is important, as it prevents muscle breakdown and stimulates the growth of lean muscle tissue. Hello definition!

For this reason, you should always refuel your body with a meal containing protein and carbohydrates within 1-2 hours. Including carbohydrates post-workout can actually help minimise cortisol production, which is the hormone blamed for stubborn belly fat!In fact if you want to eat anything ‘naughty’ the 3-hour post-workout window is your safest bet, as your body is likely to use these calories for recover, as opposed to storing them as body fat. If you love carbs, load up on wholefoods based carbohydrates such as bananas, berries, sweet potato, brown rice, quinoa and pumpkin. Your muscles will thank you for it! 

Ingredients:

1/2-1 frozen banana
1/2 can light coconut or almond milk
25g vanilla protein powder (preferably plant based) or 2 raw organic eggs
4 walnuts
1 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup ice
1/2 cup water
stevia (optional)

To improve gut function add: 1 tsp slippery elm bark powder

Method:

Blend all the ingredients in a high power blender!
You may add 1/2 cup of water to improve consistency if it’s too thick.
