Why Eating Organic Could Be The Best Health Choice for your Hormones

Why eat organic?

It’s a super important question with a range of crucial health answers.

See non-organic foods can come in close contact with a range of nasties…

Pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, insecticides.

And these take a toll not just on our environment but on the very fabric of our biology:

The can hurt humans.

For example, insecticides (including organophosphates) are neurotoxins designed to kill insects…

But they’ve been shown to hurt us, too.

Sadly, as the CSIRO notes, “Organophosphates are still widely used in agriculture in Australia even though many have been banned in the EU, and banned or restricted in the USA.”

The study Pesticide use and incident diabetes among wives of farmers in the Agricultural Health Study found a significant link between organochlorines and diabetes…

An article in the journal Diabetic Medicine noted that “Environmental pollutants, especially pesticides [are linked] to the development of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes… the effects of pesticides on glucose metabolism are too significant for a possible diabetogenic link to be dismissed.”

Research published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal stated that increased chemical exposure can increase the risk of obesity by changing how our fat cells differentiate and by negatively impacting our brain’s hunger centres.

It’s scary stuff!

By choosing organic foods (and home and personal products) we can lessen our toxic exposure and protect ourselves from their harmful effects.

Toxic relief for a healthier body

Been following a healthy food plan with ample fruits and vegetables?

Unfortunately, when this produce is grown conventionally it is the major source of our exposure to pesticides.

When organic, though, the reduced toxic load offers numerous health benefits…

Because by eating organic we are choosing foods grown or raised on farms that opt out of chemical use.

According to the study Human health implications of organic food and organic agriculture: a comprehensive review the benefits may include:

  • Reduced risk of obesity
  • A lowering of the usual rise over time in body mass index (BMI) (for example, with age)
  • Reduced risk of hypertension
  • Decreased chances of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Better balanced cholesterol levels

A beautiful boost of antioxidants

Health-giving antioxidants are found in foods like blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries, blueberries, Kiwi fruit and cherries, plums, eggplant, and kale…

And the occasional glass of red wine, deliciously water-watering dark chocolate and my gorgeous Antioxidant Protein Smoothie!

These powerful natural compounds are linked to reductions in chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and cancer…

And by reducing our levels of inflammation we may also calm inflammation, insulin resistance and so also aid fat loss.

And you guessed it, antioxidants occur in higher amounts in organic foods.

Not only does this offer benefit in and of itself, but it also helps us to combat the toxic load we are exposed to daily through pollution.

Antibiotic-free

The human gut is made up of trillions of bugs that produce and breakdown nutrients, digest our food and help us stay well.

The diversity of these bugs contributes to a healthy or unhealthy gut, weight maintenance or gain, a healthy immune system or sickness…

The balance of these microscopic bacteria, viruses, and yeast are crucial for our wellbeing.

However, antibiotics used in animals can be passed along to humans and with it create a gut microbiota dysbiosis (a leaky gut).

If you have gut problems, I recommend you read my article, 10 Top Signs You Could Have a Leaky Gut

Its effects can be profound.

By choosing organic foods you reduce your exposure to harmful toxins, boost your levels of healing antioxidants, and avoid antibiotic overload…

Your body and mind will thank you!
