Often women come to see me after being told that their blood tests are ‘normal’, yet they continue to struggle.
Their doctor remarks something like, “Well, you’re tests are ok” and then nothing more is done…
As if one test is always accurate and the person sitting in front
of them, desperately seeking help, is not as important as the number typed on the report.
Maybe you know what I mean?
But what I find frustrating is that these tests can be downright wrong.
Let’s take a look at two common examples I see with my coaching clients…
1) Insulin resistance
Insulin resistance is a common condition that causes signs and symptoms like dark skin patches (acanthosis nigricans), skin tags, weight gain especially around the mid-section, fatigue, dyslipidemia, high blood pressure and it is associated with conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, and cardiovascular disease.
Often, especially in the early days, a fasting blood sugar test or even a 2-hour glucose tolerance test will come back as ‘within normal limits’, even when it’s not.
Sugar is a sticky substance and higher than ideal levels in our blood creates issues.
So our pancreas increases the amount of insulin it releases to combat high blood glucose levels and move the excess sugar into the relative safety of our cells.
Over time, with overproduction, the cells become resistant to the actions of insulin, meaning that we need to produce more to have the same effect.
Still, with increased blood insulin levels and insulin resistance the body may be able to maintain ‘normal’ blood sugar levels and so these tests don’t detect anything out of hand.
However, these tests are just a surrogate…
When women are tested with a 2-hour glucose tolerance test including insulin levels at 0, 30, 60 and 120 minutes often a different picture emerges and insulin resistance is diagnosed.
As a holistic health coach who specialises in helping my clients achieve a lean body, assessing and addressing hypothyroidism is as important as insulin resistance for shedding unhealthy fat.
Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism include brain fog, constipation, depression, dry skin, fatigue, goitre (thyroid swelling at the front of the throat), heavy or irregular menstrual cycles, insensitivity to the cold, loss of the outer third of the eyebrows, muscle pain, and thinning scalp hair.
In the case of hypothyroidism, I’ve found: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck!
And testing for hypothyroidism is often wrong, too.
See, the research shows that the ‘normal’ range given for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels – the first and often only thyroid hormone tested – is inaccurate.
Its currently accepted ‘norm’ is between 0.5 – 4 or 5U/L (depending on the path lab used)…
It should be tighter, with a range of between 1 – 2.5U/L.
Other measurements like T4, T3, reverse T3 and thyroid autoantibodies can aid in diagnosis, too, but are only infrequently tested if TSH is considered ok.
Yet, regardless of the test results, there are steps we can take.
Identifying the likely cause of weight gain allows us to put in place natural, safe strategies to address health in a holistic and targeted manner.
When we do this, often underlying challenges – like hypothyroidism and insulin resistance – will resolve themselves.
