How to Boost your Energy Levels Naturally

How to Boost your Energy Levels Naturally

Do you know one of the most common complaints women share with me when we begin consulting together?

Fatigue…

Even overwhelming exhaustion.

Life is so damn busy and the nothing-left-in-the-tank struggle is real.

With no reserves, no energy left, the drive to succeed dwindles…

Especially when it comes to achieving a lean body.

After all, it’s hard to exercise or prepare a delish, healthy meal when your biggest need is to curl up in bed and take a much-needed nap.

Flagging energy levels have a number of causes so let’s take a look at the common culprits and then dive into how you can uncover the untapped energy you need to get slim and well.

Causes Of Exhaustion

If you are suffering from constant fatigue, please visit your doctor for a chat and appropriate blood tests.

This can shortcut the identification process and lead to a faster recovery.

Now let’s discuss the energy-sapping issues I see often in my clinic.

1) Hypothyroidism

A sluggish thyroid (aka hypothyroidism) winds back our metabolic function.

Its signs and symptoms – other the fatigue – include:

  • Weight gain
  • Feeling cold
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Muscle pain
  • Hair loss
  • Loss of libido
  • Menstrual irregularities

The important approaches to boost your thyroid health naturally, include…

a) Consuming foods high in iodine, zinc, and selenium (or supplement)

Think seaweed, fresh fish, free-range eggs, legumes, Brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds.

b) Managing your stress levels

Meditate, gently exercise, ensure sufficient sleep, consume B vitamin-rich foods like brown rice, eggs, nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens.

c) Eliminating refined sugars and alcohol

2) Insulin resistance

Insulin is produced by the pancreas in response to the foods we eat (particularly carbohydrates).

This hormone guides excess sugar from the bloodstream and into the relative safety of the cells.

Sometimes, however, our liver and muscles resist the effects of insulin resulting in a condition called insulin resistance (IR).

IR can cause the dreaded 3 pm energy crash, lethargy, hunger, and increased belly fat…

And our risk increases as we hit our 40s and beyond.

To improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the tiredness it causes…

a) Follow the hypothyroidism healing steps in b) and c) above

b) Prioritise sleep

c) Consume protein with every meal

d) Exercise

High intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance exercises are wonderful for improving insulin sensitivity.

e) Consume foods rich in chromium, magnesium and omega 3 fatty acids

Think avocado, nuts, legumes, seeds and one of my fav’s, bananas

3) Iron deficiency anaemia

Do you suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding?

Maybe you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet that is low in iron-containing foods?

Iron deficiency anaemia can leave you feeling absolutely exhausted!

Other signs and symptoms include:

  • Weakness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Frequent headaches
  • Irritability
  • Pale skin
  • Weird (non-food) cravings

On confirmation via a blood test, a simple iron supplement can restore your energy levels within days.

4) Adrenal fatigue

The fourth tiredness-triggering condition I see is the functional problem: adrenal fatigue.

I talk about this in detail here: Are You Suffering From Adrenal Fatigue?

Healing adrenal fatigue requires a multi-pronged lifestyle approach and includes…

a) Ample rest

b) Consuming a nutrient-rich breakfast – always!

c) Eliminating alcohol and caffeine (I promise it’ll be worth it!)

d) Gentle exercise (only)

e) Prioritising self-care

5) Poor sleep habits

While this may seem obvious, busy lives often lead to insufficient sleep and result in tiredness.

You must get this sorted!

How?

  • Set a regular wake time
  • Ensure your bedroom is cool, dark and quiet and your bedding is comfortable and supportive
  • Set aside blue light for at least 90 minutes before bedtime (that means no TV, tablet or smartphone)
  • Meditate before closing your eyes

If you are struggling with tiredness, you are not alone.

Schedule a consultation with your doctor as appropriate investigations will help to rule in or out a number of conditions.

Then, with the right lifestyle approaches, you can feel like a newly energised woman again…

And it feels great!
