Often women come to see me, completely fed up!
They’ve been misled.
The mainstream mantra for achieving a lean body is ‘eat less and exercise more’ but, for many, this just… doesn’t… work.
See, our feminine bodies are in constant state of hormonal flux.
And, with this, our changeable hormones can become out of sync and cause unexpected weight gain even when we feel we’re doing everything right.
This can happen in a number of ways…
With every menstrual cycle an estimated 90% of women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS), with symptoms like bloating, water retention, and a sense of being fatter.
An addition couple of kilos can creep onto the bathroom scales.
This weight usually disappears after our menstrual bleed but can be enough to make us worry and diet.
Hormones can change due to stress, our modern lifestyles, chronic exposure to toxins including those found in common personal care products and cosmetics, the foods we eat (including the unhealthy options many women crave at different points in their cycle), and these imbalances can cause longer term weight gain.
A sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism), excess cortisol, and insulin resistance are common culprits.
Your thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland at the front of your neck but its size belies its power.
Crucial to your metabolic rate, a sluggish thyroid can lead to a slowed body with greater fat accumulation.
An iodine deficiency
is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in Australia, so increasing our intake
of this mineral is important.
Boosting selenium, zinc and omega 3 fatty acid consumption can also power up fat loss.
Think: seaweed, Brazil nuts, whole free range eggs, wild caught fish, and sunflower and sesame seeds.
Calming stress, avoiding gluten and engaging in gentle exercise also helps.
Cortisol is commonly known as the ‘stress hormone’ and with elevated psychological strain come increased levels.
Able to move fat from around the body and deposit it in the abdominal region, transform immature fat cells into to mature adipocytes, and make it difficult to shed additional kilos, it’s super important to calm chronic stress.
Practices like Yoga, meditation, mindfulness, deep breathing and scheduling fun help!
When we regularly consume refined sugar and trans fat, lead a sedentary life, shoulder a world of stress, sleep poorly, and consume high levels of caffeine, blood sugar levels can rise and insulin resistance can result…
And with it comes fatigue, belly and body fat, and stubborn weight gain.
Insulin resistance is super common and many of my clients need to address this hormonal imbalance to ramp up their ability to burn fat and regain a well body and mind.
To understand blood sugar better, I’ve written an article called Blood Glucose Basics: What You Need To Know.
It’s a quick and helpful read.
To improve insulin sensitivity, follow a whole food diet, consume ample fibre, exercise regularly, sleep soundly, manage stress, and include the herbs and spices known to blunt the blood sugar response like cinnamon and turmeric.
For many of the women I coach, understanding that the calorie mantra isn’t the whole truth is enlightening and leads to better choices that get results.
