Hypothyroidism: Is this THE Reason You Keep Gaining Stubborn Fat?

Hypothyroidism: Is this THE Reason You Keep Gaining Stubborn Fat?

A new client consulted with me last week who’s tried everything she can to shed those excess kilos…

Various diets…

Bootcamp exercise regimes…

Detoxing (you’re right, not the healthy, holistic version I recommend)…

Enema’s…

You get the story: Nothing’s worked.

But as we talked I began to get a clear picture of why her fat was stubbornly clinging to her body…

It wasn’t her fault!

To me, hypothyroidism should be one of the first considerations when a 40+ woman is struggling with stubborn mid-section and body fat and the usual approaches are failing.

Yet often women are blamed by their health professionals instead of being listened to…

That’s what had happened to her, too.

But as we talked about her general health, the signs and symptoms of a sluggish thyroid kept popping up…

Tiredness…

Depression…

Constipation…

Sensitivity to the cold…

Dry skin…

Weak muscles…

Thinning hair…

Brain fog…

Muscle pain…

And of course, belly and body fat.

See your thyroid is the powerhouse of your metabolism…

And when it doesn’t work well, your ability to generate energy and regain a slim silhouette falters.

It’s simple – although often forgotten – physiology.

And it’s common…

Especially in women who have left their 20s and 30s behind.

Maybe you’ve even been tested by your GP and told your thyroid results are ‘within the normal limits’?

Or are currently being medically treated for this condition?

You can still have hypothyroidism.

If this sounds familiar, I recommend consulting with an integrative doctor or health professional for a proper thyroid assessment.

With that being said, there are important ways to improve your thyroid health and regain the body and energy you deserve…

Your food plan matters

Ensure you consume foods rich in iodine, zinc, selenium, and omega 3 fatty acids.

Iodine is found in seaweed (I love, love this as a salad!), iodised salt, tuna and prunes…

Zinc from legumes, seeds, shellfish and free range eggs…

Selenium consumption can be boosted by eating seafood, chicken and eggs…

And omega 3 fats are found in fish, walnuts, chia seeds and, again, eggs…

As you can see, there are some wonderful foods rich in a number of these key nutrients like seafood, seeds and free range eggs.

Address adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism are linked and I see these together in my clients.

To improve both conditions at once – so they don’t re-trigger each other – it’s important to:

  • Manage stress
  • Swap caffeinated for non-caffeinated beverages
  • Engage in gentle, restorative exercise
  • Reduce your sugar intake
  • Get enough sleep, and
  • Boost your consumption of healthy foods

Treat the gut

Your digestive system is crucial for wellbeing…

If you can’t break down and absorb the nutrients you consume correctly – like iodine, zinc, selenium, and omega 3 fatty acids – you will experience deficiencies, which will stress out your body and, in this case, your thyroid.

Then there is the potential problem of a leaky gut, which increases inflammation and insulin resistance…

Again, you guessed it, it has links to thyroid health.

Plus, the make up of the billions of gut bugs (the microbiota) that live inside your digestive track need to be functioning for your thyroid to work well, too.

How can you improve your gut health and so your thyroid?

  • Avoid sugary foods and beverages…
  • Give up gluten…
  • Choose organic foods and products…
  • Drink Kombucha and filtered water…
  •

Supplement sensibly, with evidence-based compounds like quercetin, Ginkgo biloba extract, vitamins C and E, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), L-glutamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG).

When it comes to hypothyroidism, my approach is ‘if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck’…

By identifying this problem and specifically targeting treatment to address it, many women find they feel so. much. better!

And as a side effect of restoring healthy function, their body begins to naturally shed excess fat.
