Feeling an afternoon energy slump approaching and need a sweet fix? This Healthy Chocolate milk will hit the spot.
This recipe is based on nut milk – which is lower in calories than cow’s milk and contains important micronutrients including calcium, iron and magnesium. Nut milk is perfect for anyone with lactose intolerance and will not raise blood sugar levels like cow’s milk.
Store-bought chocolate milk is usually loaded with processed sugar, with an average serving containing approximately 20-25g of sugar (4-5 teaspoons). To make matters worse, many brands include cheap fillers such as maltodextrin, creamers and gluten. Instead of consuming these over-processed, sugar-ladened beverages, simply make your own!
Cacao – not only does it give your food a delicious chocolatey taste – it is also an Amazonian Superfood! Cacao is packed with iron, magnesium and calcium and is a perfect source of all these micronutrients for vegetarians and vegans.
Of course, we cannot forget the bliss-factor responsible for those feel-good hormones we get after indulging in a few squares of chocolate – hello Serotonin! Not only does it taste like you’re indulging in something naughty – but you get to naturally elevate your mood without the guilt or the sugar crash that normally results from an afternoon chocolate bar.
