You’ve probably heard me talk about the importance of choosing organic produce and products before?
While they are, without doubt, the healthier option there is a little-known reason that makes switching from chemical to toxin-free even more important…
Your hormone (endocrine) system.
See, while toxins increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes, they also disrupt your hormones.
How… and where do we get exposed?
Perfluorinated compound (PFC’s)
An article in the journal Toxicology Letters found we are exposed to PFC’s through food packing materials, nonstick cookware, protective coatings for paper, stain resistant chemicals on carpets and couches and waterproof and breathable textiles.
These chemicals are known hormonal disrupters that can interfere with oestrogen and androgen receptors, cause an irregular menstrual cycle and negatively affect our crucial thyroid hormones including thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and thyroid binding globulin (TBG).
A herbicide – also known as a weed killer – can alter hormonal health, too.
With a 100-fold increase in the use of glyphosate (the active ingredient in Round-Up) over the past four decades, there are measurable concentrations of this herbicide in our foods and, commonly, us.
It’s scary but glyphosate residues were found in 90.3% of 300 soybean samples and there are higher glyphosate residues in 25% of sampled bread.
So there is a good chance our exposure comes from what we put in our mouths.
This chemical has been proven to be toxic to genes, to have both anti-oestrogenic and anti-androgenic effects, and to impact on the important ability of the body to convert androgens to oestrogens.
A pesticide is used to kill pests.
As with herbicides, it’s impossible to target a single creature or plant without affecting others…
Collateral damage, as they say.
But these chemicals do more than kill bugs…
Our hormones take a beating, too.
They can harm the pancreas, interfere with insulin secretion and increase the risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes…
And bind to and activate hormone receptors (including androgen, oestrogen, and the thyroid regulating CAR) and mimic the action of our natural hormone’s or stop them from working all together…
Plus, they increase the risk of breast cancer.
For example, a staggering 400% higher risk was seen in women with increased blood levels of Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE)…
While the use of its parent Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has been deregulated in Australia, it is still in use by our neighbour countries and the wind and water are able to deliver this chemical to our shores.
The dangerous pesticide mix
And when we think about pesticides and their effects on our health, it’s also important to consider that:
- Pesticide by-products may be more harmful on our hormones that the initial chemical itself, and
- Each of these can combine to create a heavier dose and greater adverse actions…
Just like a backpack with 20 bricks instead of one, it takes a heavier toll.
What can we do?
These two steps will help…
- Significantly reduce your exposure (organic produce and products are a great start!), and
- Undergo a professionally supported and guided detox, regularly
Chemicals can significantly disrupt our hormones, so we need to ensure we protect ourselves as best we can.
