SNS Dominance: What It Is And Why It’s Stopping You Achieving A Lean Body!

If you haven’t heard of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) dominance, I am so glad you’re reading this because it is such an important issue.

And if you don’t get this one thing under control it can lead to increased fat mass, including around the midsection.

If I was pressed to list my top 3 reasons why women struggle to shift those additional kilos, this would be right up there at the top of the list…

So what it is?

Let’s take a look…

Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) runs your body’s unconscious functions…

Your heart and respiratory rates, digestive and urinary processes, blood pressure, blood sugar control, and response to infection and stress are examples of the ANS at work.

The ANS is made from two parts: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic halves.

The parasympathetic nervous system is referred to as the ‘rest and digest’ component as it deals with the functions required for long-term health…

The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) formers the ‘fight or flight’ side of the equation and is designed to fire off short-term life savings changes.

And in ancient times when tribes or animals attacked suddenly, the SNS would fire and create immediate changes…

Energy and resources were instantly diverted to the muscles required to run or fight, the brain functions needed to identify an escape or deliver the winning blow, the cardiorespiratory system to increase heart rate, blood pressure and enhanced lung function, the metabolic pathways to ensure glucose stayed in the blood to power the required responses.

And while this switch to the SNS was an absolute life-saving design when we faced real and imminent danger, our modern age has changed this dramatically.

Now, our stresses come from bills, challenging relationships, work expectations, the drive to forge and maintain a successful career, insomnia, divorce, and the constant busyness of looking after kids and our partners and having little time to ourselves.

It’s simply overwhelming!

And because this constant assault never abates, we rarely enter the parasympathetic state and get stuck with the sympathetic nervous system turned on…

We become what’s called sympathetic nervous system (SNS) dominant.

Why does SNS dominance matter when it comes to our weight?

That’s an important question!

See, the biological changes that occur with chronic stress set us up for weight gain…

Insatiable hunger as the body believes it needs additional power…

Cravings for sugary foods as glucose provides a ready supply of energy…

The metabolic changes that occur as a result of the chronic excess blood sugar and hormonal shifts…

The drop in gut function that has been shown to increase our waist size…

(After all, digesting food is not a priority when faced with imminent danger)

And our body’s desire to hold onto it’s fat in case of an emergency…

Over time this can pack on the pounds and make them hard to lose!

Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Your body is not trying to harm you, it is trying to keep you alive!

That’s why it is so important for us to regularly implement strategies to de-stress: Meditation, gentle exercise, catching up with friends, turning off the news, leaving work at work.

Often my clients find once their parasympathetic nervous system is triggered into action they feel more energised and happier than they have in years…

And those additional kilos begin to melt away.
