I’m a huge, huge fan of Yoga and regularly recommend those I coach engage in its regular practice…
There are so many wonderful reasons to incorporate Yoga in your life!
Let’s take a look at five of my fav’s…
Strength, flexibility, and balance
Regular Yoga is great for gently strengthening our muscles, especially those that become weak from constantly sitting in one position.
The well-loved Sun Salutation has been shown to improve muscle strength and endurance.
Research in the International Journal of Yoga has, unsurprisingly, proven an increase in flexibility and balance with regular practice.
As many Yoga lovers find, this flexibility and balance extend from physical aspects and into their psychological wellbeing, too.
Leads to a lean body
This ancient discipline is an effective addition to the modern challenge of overweight and obesity.
The combination of breath work, mindfulness, and physical poses have been shown to promote a healthier size, to prevent obesity, and to lead to improved body composition.
I believe it is nigh on impossible to be well, achieve a lean body and heal while under excess, unmanaged strain.
Our stress system is controlled by a balance between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and the parasympathetic (relaxation) systems.
When we have too much worry or nervous tension, our body and mind focus on how to escape…
This pushes more sugar into our circulation so we can battle or flee…
Down-regulates digestion, reproduction and our ability to perform complex tasks…
Leads to cravings, a love of sugary and fatty foods and fat storage…
But Yoga is able to quieten ringing alarm bells and bring us back to equilibrium.
As a study in the journal Medical Hypotheses says, “Central regulatory systems become more balanced and flexible, [stress] is reduced leading to health improvements.”
Easing high blood pressure
As age and body fat creeps higher, so can blood pressure and its associated risks of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
Yet Yoga can help here, too.
The study Yoga Practice Improves the Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure: A Randomized Controlled Trial found that after only one month, one-hour daily practice resulted in reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
That is incredible!
Mind, body and soul connection
Life can be so busy that we miss the opportunity to connect and fully listen to each part of ourselves…
We suffer from brain fog or depression and consider it a mental problem…
We feel pain and think of it as a physical concern…
We experience a yearning for something greater, to connect deeply, even to just be, and understand this as a soul or spiritual issue…
Yet, in reality, we are not separable.
Each part is like the three legs of a table: Remove one and it can no longer stand.
Yoga allows us to connect each component of ourselves through a simple practice.
To incorporate our mind, body, and soul and understand that we are made from complex interactions of these three components at all moments of our days and nights.
This realisation is powerful!
To begin practicing Yoga, join a group, search online for digital classes or try one-on-one sessions with a qualified teacher.
It may just transform your life!
