Inside Plastic Packaging: Common Chemicals that Create Hormonal Chaos

Published December 1, 2018

I want to discuss an important topic that, while you…

I want to discuss an important topic that, while you may have heard me talk about before, is constantly overlooked but many health professionals…

Why?

Because it could be contributing to your hormonal imbalance.

See, we’ve known for many years that the chemical Bisphenol A, commonly called BPA, can mimic oestrogen and change how your hormones function.

BPA also creates inflammation – a driver of hormonal change, insulin resistance and disease – and is involved in endometrial, ovarian and breast disease.

This common toxic compound is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, which means it is in the tins and plastic packaging of our edible products…

And from there it can leach into the foods and drinks we consume and then into our bodies.

(That’s one of the reasons I recommend my clients eat real food like fresh fruit and vegetables and ‘shop around the edges’ of the supermarket to reduce exposure to packaged foods)

According to an article in the journal, Gene, BPA interacts with an astounding 1932 genes and proteins…

That means this chemical profoundly changes how your genes work.

And while BPA-free products have been marketed as an improvement, the alternative plastics likely come with significant risks.

For example, phthalates are a class of chemicals used to soften and increase plastic flexibility and these, too, have been shown to interfere with gene expression and hormone function.

So, particularly if you already have hormone-related conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and fibroids, it’s important to reduce your exposure, wherever you can.

How?

1) Choose a glass or stainless steel water bottle

2) Don’t heat plastics that contain food or drink

3) Eat real foods that come packaging-free

4) Store your foods in paper bags, glass containers, and boxes

5) Detoxify regularly

The good news is that will a little planning and organisation it’s possible to reduce the impacts these dangerous chemicals have on your body.
