It is Time to Change your Relationship with Your Bathroom Scales!

Have you got a love-hate relationship with your bathroom scales?…

Have you got a love-hate relationship with your bathroom scales?

Unsurprisingly, many women do…

So I want to discuss how to better use this tool and change your relationship with it.

See…

The bathroom scales are just that: a tool…

And like any tool, they only measure what they are programmed to.

In the case of scales, they give us a cold, hard number that measures our entire weight…

Not just our fat mass.

The problems with this are pretty obvious, but when our emotions come into the picture our logic can leave…

And we can feel dejected.

Yet, there are a number of important aspects the bathroom scales don’t tell us.

These include…

Fluid levels

We, women, have incredible bodies that have a natural ebb and flow through our menstrual cycle.

In the first half as our estrogen levels rise so, too, can fluid retention…

And like all matter, the fluid has a weight.

Muscle mass

I teach my clients about healthy exercise and resistance training is one part…

Because this builds health-giving muscle mass…

The kind we need to burn fat and to be well…

But muscle is also matter, and so it increases our absolute weight.

So…

There may be times when you step on the bathroom scales and feel disappointed, yet when you try on your clothes…

Wow! You look great!

Increased muscle mass could be why…

What’s the time?

I remember reading a study that looked at when our weight is most stable; at the point in the week that is most reflective of our progress…

Because we need to compare apples with apples.

Apparently, it’s Wednesday morning.

This could be related to how our eating habits change between the work week and the weekend, so it’s important to find a time where things are more likely to be stable so you don’t find yourself on the psychological fat loss rollercoaster that can cause emotional eating and a loss of self-love and motivation.

(And this is why I recommend you should weigh yourself, at most, once a week!)

And speaking of comparing apples with apples…

What’s in your tummy?

As we’ve talked about, all matter has a weight…

So if one time you weigh yourself after you’ve guzzled a litre of water, and the next not…

Or if one week you’ve stood on the scales first thing in the morning, before eating, naked…

And the next, after you’ve finished a two-course meal and are fully clothed…

You can imagine your weight might change.

But it’s not an indication that you’ve gained fat…

Just that there is a more actual weight on the bathroom scale.

My advice?

The bathroom scales are just one tool in your lean body toolbox…

Understand that its absolute weight does not define what is happening in your body.

And if you want to use the bathroom scales as part of your progress score sheet?

Only weigh yourself once each week, on a day where those leading up to D-day are stable regarding your food intake and exercise, before you’ve eaten, preferably straight after you’ve been to the toilet, and when you are naked.

And remember, the number doesn’t measure your self-worth so give yourself a little slack.
